I love all of the Mountain Men series so far about Smoke and Preacher, the books are so well wrote I just about picture it as I read it. Are there any movies based on these books? And what exactly does the "owl hoot" trail refer to?

There hasn't been any movies based on the work of William W. Johnstone yet and there doesn't appear to be any in the planning stages either. But, I think that every book by him that I have ever read are extremely cinematic, and would all make excellent movies. Having studied screenwriting in college, I'd love to try my hand at adapting the Last Mountain Man into a screenplay. I think it would take a big fan of the source material to actually write a script that even comes close to doing the book justice. Now, here's the really big question; who would you cast as Smoke?

1 Smoke-Chris Pine

2 Preacher-Willie Nelson/Burt Renyolds

3 Sally-Angie Harmon

I could accept Chris Pine as Smoke, but I think I'd prefer a newcomer in the role, someone that doesn't have a lot of credits to associate them with, and let's face the facts, having already played Captain Kirk, we can certainly associate Pine with an iconic figure. So, having him play Smoke is kind of like equating Smoke with Kirk, sure, fans can see it, but does that make it a good idea?

In the role of Preacher, I think a great choice would be Robert Duvall, and I think, if the film is made right, he'd probably win an Oscar for best supporting actor.

There has been several inquiries for a Preacher movie.. but it seems as if there may be too much Cussing and Killing for the public.
I really didn't understand that reasoning..

Too much cussing and killing?

I'm rolling on the floor here. That's ridiculous. If cussing and killing too much were banned from movies, we'd have practically nothing to watch!

I love Robert Duvall's acting. Yes... he'd make a great Preacher. Absolutely!! As for Smoke...hmmm... there are many younger actors that could fit that role, but so many are so liberal that it just bothers me to think they'd play the part of an honorable man.

But I'm open for more suggestions and yes... I'd love to see an ACCURATE portrayal done. They did a Longarm movie, way back... and it turned out to be a joke. They'd have to do much better than that.

There are a few liberal actors that might make a good Smoke, but at this time of night I can't think of their names. Guess I'll have to go to bed and sleep on it.

Preacher- Sam Elliot . Sally- Kristina Lokken. They have that western look. As for Smoke I have to think on it.

Hey Eaglefreak, I'm glad you could see my Duvall nomination, I thought there might be a few people that might want to laugh me off of this board for that remark, but I honestly think he'd make a great Preacher. As far as a young actor to play Smoke that isn't a liberal, good luck, but, if you allow a decent actor into the part, and do your best to ignore their politics, and just enjoy them in the role, you might find a great choice. I mean, heck, look at 24, tons of conservatives like myself love Sutherland on the show, but he's still a rather proud liberal. As long as the writing is good, you can turn any decent actor into a man of honor, they're actors, they don't need to believe in anything, they just need to be handed the right lines.
